Philosophy of Education

“The principal goal of education is to create individuals who are capable of doing new things, not simply of repeating what other generations have done.” Jean Piaget

I believe what Piaget said is similar to the philosophy I have about education. Implementing this philosophy into my own classroom has come with its own set of hurdles. It’s much easier to keep doing the same thing that has been done for years and years than it is to create a new way to teach a topic. Even though it is more difficult to think out of the box and design new lessons, my students seem to be much more engaged and willing to participate if it is a new and fun activity.

Being able to supply students with the tools they will need to be successful adults in the community is the most rewarding part of being a teacher. Creating ways to engage students so well that they don’t realize they are actually working is gratifying. What becomes difficult is motivating those students who “think they can’t” or don’t believe that they will ever be good at math when they really might understand some portions of it and need to be able to use those strategies to be successful in other areas.

I think that students learn best from a variety of ways. I think it is very important to mix up how lessons are being taught and create a variety of methods throughout one lesson in order to reach all students.  I often use  SMART board presentations when giving students notes. Then it is up to them to write down what they believe would be helpful to them.

In my classroom students will learn to meet deadlines.  They will be able to be able to express their opinion. They will also be able to relate math concepts into the real world. Example finding a unit rate.

Personal goals: I want to inspire my students to be hard workers and to try their hardest with everything they do. I want them to learn how to problem solve and not take the easy way out. I want do more professional development and learn how to incorporate a variety of group and movement activities in my high school math classes daily.
